Policy, Copyright & Compliance

Creative Commons

Also called: CC, CC BY, Creative Commons licence

Instead of negotiating permission each time, a rights holder attaches a Creative Commons licence and anyone can use the work within its terms. The conditions stack: attribution alone, attribution with share-alike, non-commercial, no derivatives, and combinations of those. YouTube offers one option on uploads, Creative Commons Attribution, which lets other creators reuse your footage with credit.

Two mistakes recur. Non-commercial licences rule out monetised videos, which covers most of YouTube. And marking your own upload as Creative Commons licenses nothing inside it that you never owned. That includes the music.
