Cutting on action

Also called: cut on action, action match

A hand reaches for a door in the wide shot, and the cut lands mid-reach so the close-up picks the same movement up where it left off. The eye is following the motion, which gives it something to do other than register that the frame changed.

The overlap is where it goes wrong. Shoot both angles through the full action, then in the edit find the same frame of movement in each and trim to it. Leave a couple of frames of overlap. A cut that repeats a fraction of the motion reads better than one that skips it.
