Day in the life
Also called: DITL
The day supplies the structure. That is why the format survives everything: it begins at waking, it ends at bed, and the running order is decided before you film anything. It runs on curiosity about how other people actually live, so the lever that matters is unfamiliarity. A shift on a trawler or in an emergency department carries itself. A morning routine in a tidy flat has been filmed ten thousand times and needs something else inside it. The weakness is that the format tempts creators into shooting a day with no event in it and trusting the shape to compensate.
