Esports

Also called: competitive gaming

Esports sits around games rather than inside them, made up of tournaments, franchised leagues, sponsored organisations, coaches, analysts and an audience that watches other people compete. Most of the scene forms around titles such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Valorant and Dota.

For creators the distinction worth holding is between playing a game and covering the competitive scene, because they attract different viewers. Gameplay channels grow on personality. Coverage grows on being early and accurate about rosters, patches and results. Coverage also runs on a calendar, so traffic climbs through a major tournament and goes flat in the off-season, which makes the lane hard to publish against all year round.
