Pattern interrupt

Also called: pattern break

Hold one framing, one voice and one pace for long enough and a watching brain starts filing the input as background noise. A pattern interrupt breaks that: a cut to a different angle, a sound effect, a graphic slamming in, the presenter standing up mid-sentence. Editors tend to place them where attention historically sags, often on the way out of the hook. Overdone, it becomes its own pattern. A jump cut every three seconds is as monotonous as no cuts at all, because the break only works while it is still unexpected.
