Pilot episode

Also called: pilot, pilot video, test episode

Television makes one before ordering a series, and the logic carries over. You build the format properly once, publish it, and use what comes back to decide whether to make ten more. The point is to spend one video answering the question instead of discovering the answer six episodes deep with a schedule you resent.

Judge it on two things. First, whether you can actually produce it repeatedly at that standard, which is the constraint that kills most formats. Second, on how it performs over weeks, since a video's reach is not settled on day one and recommendations reach back to older uploads. A pilot that dies on the first evening and finds its audience a month later has passed.
