Ripple delete
Also called: close gap, delete and close gap
An ordinary delete leaves a hole where the clip was and everything downstream stays put. Ripple delete closes the hole, shortening the sequence by exactly the amount you cut. This is the backbone of paper-edit style trimming, where you work through a talking-head take removing stumbles and dead air and the timeline gets shorter as you go. The thing that catches people out is everything on the other tracks. Music, captions and B-roll above the cut can shift out of sync unless those tracks are locked or synced, so check what moved before you carry on.
