Script breakdown

Also called: breakdown, breaking down the script

Borrowed from film scheduling, and it does the same work at any scale. You read the finished script once as a shopping list, writing down every physical thing it demands: shots, locations, props, wardrobe, guests, plus the b-roll and every graphic or on-screen caption it implies. Out comes a set of lists you can work from on the day, and an honest sense of how long the shoot will really take. For solo creators what it buys is early warning. It finds the line that quietly requires a drone, a second location or a prop nobody owns on the Tuesday you can still rewrite it, instead of on the shoot, when the only remaining option is to cut it.
