Sound Design

Also called: audio design

Sound design covers every audio decision beyond capturing the dialogue: the music bed and where it drops out, whooshes and impacts on cuts, room tone under a voiceover, and the moments you leave silent on purpose.

Viewers do not consciously hear any of this and they feel all of it. Room tone under every cut, a bed that ducks under speech, and one or two accents on the beats you want noticed gets you most of the way.
