Sound Effects

Also called: SFX, sound FX

Everything audible that is neither dialogue nor music. Some of it replaces what the camera failed to record, a door, a keyboard, footsteps on gravel. The rest is punctuation: a click under a graphic, a whoosh across a transition, a low hit on a reveal. Used lightly they make an edit feel deliberate; used heavily they make it feel like a mobile game, and the tell is a whoosh on every single cut. They carry licences the same way music does, so a sound lifted off somebody else's video is a claim waiting to happen.
