Vanity metrics
Also called: vanity metric
A metric earns its place if a change in it would change a decision. Subscriber count, total views and follower numbers usually fail that test for a working creator, because knowing they went up tells you nothing about which video to make next or what to fix. The useful versions sit one level down: which videos brought those subscribers, where viewers left, which titles got clicked.
Vanity metrics still have their uses as a long-run health check, and they matter to sponsors buying reach. The trap is letting them eat the attention the diagnostic numbers need.
