Verification began as an anti-impersonation measure for people likely to be copied. On YouTube the badge appears next to the channel name in search and on the channel page, and it signals that this is the official channel for that creator or brand.
Several other platforms have since attached verification to a paid subscription, so a tick on X or Instagram may mean somebody pays a monthly fee. It confers no reach, no monetisation and no support, whatever the folklore says. Impersonation is the reason to want one, and the fix for a fake account is a report.
