Match cut
Also called: matched cut, graphic match
The outgoing and incoming frames rhyme. A spinning wheel becomes a spinning record, a hand reaching left continues the same reach somewhere else, or someone sits down in one room and stands up in another. Because the eye tracks the shared element across the join, the cut lands as a decision instead of a jump. Editors use it to compress time and to change location without reaching for a transition effect. It has to be planned at the shoot for the shapes and directions to line up, which is why most of the ones you admire were storyboarded long before the edit.
