Directories enforce a real specification: square, RGB, JPEG or PNG, at least 1400 by 1400 pixels and ideally 3000 by 3000, with a file size small enough to load quickly. The design problem is that nobody sees it anywhere near that size. In a podcast app it sits about as big as a postage stamp inside a scrolling list, so the show name has to be readable there and a photograph of two people at a desk turns into noise. Keep dated text off it as well, since an episode count or a schedule promise ages badly and is awkward to change later.
