Editing & Post-Production

Silence detection

Also called: strip silence, auto-cut silences, detect silence

Premiere, Resolve, Descript and most transcript-based editors have a version. You set a volume floor and a minimum length, the software marks every pause that qualifies, and one command removes the lot. The first tedious hour of a talking-head edit becomes about a minute.

Set the threshold too aggressively and the result is unlistenable. Speech needs breath and a beat between sentences, and stripping all of them produces the machine-gun delivery now instantly recognisable as an automated cut.
