Story circle
Also called: Dan Harmon story circle, eight-step story circle
The steps run: a character is somewhere comfortable, wants something, enters an unfamiliar situation, adapts to it, gets what they wanted, pays a price for it, returns to where they started, and comes back changed. Harmon built the loop as a working shorthand for television scripts, compressing Campbell's monomyth into 8 beats you could sketch on a napkin. Creators borrow it for documentary uploads, challenge videos and anything where a person goes through something and comes out different. It fits tutorials badly. A viewer who arrived with a question wants it answered rather than dramatised.
