Business expense

Also called: write-off, deductible expense, tax deduction

Cameras, lenses, microphones, lighting, software subscriptions, a share of home internet and power, travel to a shoot, invoices from an editor: all of it is ordinarily deductible against creator income where the cost is genuinely for the business. Mixed-use items are where creators get it wrong. A phone or a room used for both work and life is usually claimable only in proportion, and that proportion has to be defensible if anyone asks. Gear above a certain value may also have to be capitalised and written down across several years instead of deducted at once. Thresholds and rules differ by country, so use this as a prompt to ask an accountant.
