The term is contested and does a lot of work for whoever is using it. To some it names a real accountability mechanism for people with an audience and no boss. To others it names a pile-on with no proportionality and no route back.
What is observable is the shape. Something surfaces, it travels faster than any response can be prepared, sponsors withdraw first because they have least to gain from waiting, and the audience splits between people who leave and people who dig in. Recovery is far more common than the term suggests.
