What makes it different from a subscriber count is portability. The list belongs to you, moves with you between providers, and still works the day a channel is suspended or an algorithm changes its mind. Creators use it for launches, memberships and anything with a deadline, because a message lands in an inbox at a moment you choose. It comes with duties. Consent rules require people to have asked to be there, every message needs a working unsubscribe, and a list nobody has heard from in a year performs worse than a small one that gets used.
