Fan name

Give a group a name and you hand people a way to identify with it. That is the whole mechanism. Fan names turn up in openings, on merchandise, in membership tier titles, and eventually in the comments where viewers use it on each other, which is the point at which it has worked. The ones that stick usually come out of an in-joke the audience started. The ones that die get announced in a video as a branding exercise.
