Channel Strategy & Niche
Channel Hiatus
Also called: hiatus, going dark, taking a break
Creators avoid breaks because they expect the algorithm to punish them. YouTube's own analysis of around 40,000 upload breaks lasting between eight and sixty days found no consistent drop in viewership afterwards, and a quarter of the channels that took one came back to viewership more than 50 per cent higher, with longer breaks tending to look better than shorter ones. What a hiatus costs is audience habit and momentum. Both are recoverable. Tell people it is happening, give a rough return date, and come back with something worth the wait. Burning out mid-run and disappearing without a word is the version that does damage.
