Algorithm, Search & Distribution

Direct or unknown

Also called: direct traffic, unknown traffic

YouTube lists this alongside search, suggested and browse in the traffic source report. It collects views where the referring surface could not be identified: someone pasting the URL, a bookmark, a signed-out viewer, or an app that passes no referrer data. A large direct or unknown share usually means people are sharing your link in messaging apps rather than anything being wrong. Creators often read it as bot traffic. Treat it as the bucket for everything unlabelled, then compare it against where you actually promoted the video.
