Shorts & Vertical Video

Vertical microdrama

Also called: micro-drama, short drama, vertical drama

The format came out of the Chinese short drama boom and now runs on dedicated apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox, where the opening episodes are free and the rest unlock with coins or a subscription. A season can run to eighty or a hundred instalments, shot fast on small budgets, with plots built for momentum: secret heirs, revenge, hidden identities, sudden fortunes.

Creators meet it in two ways. Free episodes get posted to Shorts, TikTok and Reels as a funnel into the paid app, which is why the feeds are full of them. And the production model, cheap and serialised and written for a phone held upright, is being borrowed by creators who want scripted work without a film crew.
