A video podcast is a show recorded to camera as well as to microphone, so the same session can be published as a YouTube video, played in the background like audio, and picked up in a podcast app. YouTube lets you mark a playlist as a podcast, which puts the show into its podcast surfaces.
The reason the format grew is continuity across devices. A listener moves from the car to a speaker to a phone to the television and keeps the same episode going, which a plain RSS feed cannot offer.
