Upload at 2048 by 1152 pixels or larger, keep the file under 6MB, put every piece of text and logo inside the 1235 by 338 safe area at the centre, then check it on a phone. Anything outside that strip gets cropped on some device, and the widest crop appears on a television.

The banner is one of the few places you can tell a first-time visitor what the channel is about, and most creators waste it on the channel name they can already see above it. Say what the channel covers and when it publishes. Any date or schedule you put there needs updating, so leave it out unless you will.
