Channel Strategy & Niche
Format-Driven Channel
Also called: format-led channel, format-first channel
Some channels are watched because of who is on screen. A format-driven channel is watched because of what the episode does: the same structure, the same rules, a new subject each time. Blind taste tests, teardowns, 24 hours in a place, one question asked of a hundred strangers. The advantage is that a format survives a change of host, scales to a team, and gives an editor a template instead of a blank timeline. The cost is that formats wear out, and the channels that last treat theirs as a season rather than a permanent identity.
